Obituary for Elizabeth (Betty) Jane Weiss
Elizabeth (Betty) Jane Weiss was born to Laddie and Marie (Korte) on March 15, 1941 in Platte Center, NE. She lived her life with gusto and surrounded by her adoring family, she passed away Peacefully on January 3, 2019 in Gretna, NE. Betty graduated from St. Bonaventure High School, Columbus, NE in 1959. She worked at the Y Knot Drive-In during high school. After graduating, she moved to Omaha to attend business school. After being set up on a blind date by her roommate, she met the love of her life, George. They married October 29, 1960 and made their home in Council Bluffs, IA. In 1962 they welcomed their son Glen Weiss and in 1963 a daughter Susan (Weiss) Shirley followed by "whoops" daughter Patrice (Weiss) DeVault in 1970. After raising her children to school age she decided to achieve her lifelong dream of becoming a nurse. She attended Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs, IA and graduated with an LPN License in 1976. She accepted a position with Clarkson Hospital in Omaha, NE where she lovingly cared for patients for 28 years. Betty had a very spirited personality and was known as a bit of a rebel in her younger years. She and George loved traveling and camping, where they made lifelong friends from all over the country. After retirement she enjoyed driving around town in her convertible and shopping and spoiling her grandchildren Betty is preceded in death by parents Laddie and Marie Markytan, brother-in-law Larry Brezinski and son-in-law James Shirley. She is survived by her husband of 58 years George, sister Janet Brezinski, son Glen (Elizabeth) Weiss, daughter Susan Shirley, daughter Patrice DeVault, 8 grandkids: Ashley Shirley, Boston Weiss, Elizabeth (Neco) Zahrn, Danny (Jules) Moser, Kevin (Scotti) Moser, Ryan Moser, Paxton and Levi DeVault, 6 great-grandkids: Samantha Anzures, Austen Shirley, Sawyer Moser, Hayes Moser, Bella Moser and Charlie Romero; nieces, nephews, and countless "adopted" children. She was truly a mother to all and will be sadly missed.
Visitation will be Sunday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Maher Funeral Home with a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. led by Deacon Jean Plourde. Funeral Mass will be Monday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 6905 Blondo St. Omaha, NE with Rev. Joseph Wray officiating. A luncheon at Queen of Apostles Catholic Church, 3304 4th Ave. Council Bluffs, IA will follow the Mass.
