Obituary for Glen B. Smith
Glen B. Smith, 86, longtime resident of Missouri Valley, Iowa, died January 14, 2013. He was born June 24, 1926, in River Sioux, to James M. and Maude (Blunt) Smith. Glen played on an undefeated football team coached by Tom Ryan and graduated from Missouri Valley High School in 1945. Glen was drafted into the U.S. Army in early 1945 and served in WWII in the Pacific Theater, receiving several decorations and citations before his discharge at the rank of Sergeant in December, 1946. He married Jean V. Skelton in Garden City, Kansas shortly after returning to the U.S., raised four children in Missouri Valley, and they were married 25 years. Glen worked as a meat cutter in Missouri Valley before buying Smith Transfer from his mother following his father’s death in 1950. He operated the business for forty years (partnering with his brother, Milford for many of those years) before retiring in 1990. In 1970 Glen was elected Mayor of Missouri Valley and served for two years. During his time in office, the City celebrated its Centennial, and Glen was instrumental in securing funds for the construction of Culvin Heights and the City’s first traffic light at the intersection of 4th and Erie. In 1972 he married Angela (Fagan) Lustgraaf and they resided in Missouri Valley until the present time. They enjoyed dancing, eating out, gambling and spending time with family and friends. They spent several winters in Phoenix, Arizona and took numerous fishing vacations to the Bemidji, Minnesota area. Glen loved dogs, outdoor activities including camping, fishing, mushroom and small game hunting, polka music and spending time with his family. He was a 60 year member of the American Legion. Glen was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, one sister, and a stepson, Kevin Lustgraaf. He is survived by his wife, Angela; children Perry (Kris) Smith of Logan, Iowa; Pat (Connie) Smith of Winona, Minnesota; Laura (Brian) Gumm of Sheboygan, Wisconsin; Joe (Amy) Smith of Missouri Valley, Iowa, and two step children, Chris (Will) Cleaver of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Marlin Lustgraaf (Diane) of Missouri Valley, Iowa; 10 grandchildren, 8 step grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. The family would like to sincerely thank the staff of Longview Home for their kind and quality care provided to Glen during his final years.
