Obituary for Sally R. Spidell
Sally R. Spidell, age 76, of Council Bluffs passed away on Saturday, March 20, 2021 at Risen Son Christian Village.
Sally was born on May 22, 1944 in Council Bluffs to her late wonderful parents Charles and Rosie (Walters) Swanger and late siblings, Betty, Charlie and Richard, Sally raised 6 children and over 250 children in her Child Care, she was active in Kreft Elementary School Booster Club, and attended sports games the children were active in. She ran children to dance lessons and had a Girl Scout Troop for 13 years. She taught Kids neighborhood club, was active in the Longfellow Booster Club and was President for 6 years, she was a Volunteer Reading Grandma. Sally volunteered to do Santa Secret shop, and helped with the Carnival at Longfellow. She was very active at Southside Christian Church, was President of the Women’s Fellowship, did a Bible Study for the Rachel’s Well Wishers Circle, was a Jr. High Sunday School Teacher, was the Church Clerk, served and has been Director of Vacation Bible School for over 20 years. Past volunteer for the Risen Son Christian Village Membership Committee and did the churches Camperships. Started a Red Hat Society group The Red Hat Angels with 22 members in April of 2004. The group is still active. She was a proud member of Beta Sigma Phi and Laureate Gamma Sigma sorority sisters. She had 18 grandchildren and several Bonus grandchildren and she shared with and had many stay the night on occasion. She attended their school programs and functions. She had a foreign exchange student, Makko, and she was an International Child Guide.
Sally was also preceded in death by her granddaughter, Ashley Reed.
Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Gordon Spidell; 5 daughters, Betsy and John Spidell Hernandez; Jacquelyn Archer and Mike McGallian; Kandi Spidell and Darrell Harris; Stacy Spidell; Sally and Bart Gochenour; son, Anthony and Angie Spidell; 26 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; sisters, Ruth and Richard May; Peggy Larsen; Brother, Jack and Carol Swanger; other relatives.
Visitation with family on Friday from 6:00-8:00PM at Maher Funeral Home. Funeral service on Saturday at 10:00AM at Southside Christian Church 1919 So. 10th Street. Burial Cedar Lawn Cemetery. Memorials to Southside Christian Church.
